"Jazz Paradigms" is a 36" x 36" gallery wrapped canvas in a shadow frame. It represents my fascination with the work of Amedeo Modigliani's works in which he elongated facial and neck features to create a very unique artistic treatment of the human body.

I am a serious fan of Wassily Kandinsky (1866 - 1944), a Russian painter most often recognized as the Father of Abstract Art. Although I began with "realism," I appreciate what Matisse said: "I don't paint things. I paint the difference between things."
Academically, I have taken classes in oil painting, drawing, water color, Prismacolor, pastels, pen and ink. I try to not stray far from the elements of design.--shape, color, space, form, line, value and texture.
In some respects, I am most comfortable in the 40's and 50's with the development of Abstract Expressionism and the works of the artists of the New York School.
Every month I publish a newsletter identifying artists (or periods) that I am studying. I include my own interpretation of those works and discuss how they have influenced me. To be a part of this journey, simply send me a request at bettyharper2013@gmail.com
